You have
read the text at home (I hope) and looked up most of the unknown or difficult
words (I like to believe).
Thus in you class discussion you can
concentrate on the following aspects:
1. What kind of person do you think Donna Cord is? (Why does she use
the beginning of her text to compare her credentials with those of other “My
Turn” writers?)
2. What kind of forum does she use to present her views? (Why might she
have been invited by the magazine to write this column?)
3. What is her anger about? (List her complaints in some sort of order)
4. Make a list of the questions in the text and comment on their
function. Does she expect answers?
5. Find the colloquial phrases in her article and describe the style
she uses.
6. Try to find examples of phrases to complain or to express anger. Why
do you think she uses such an informal, colourful language?
7. Do you agree with Donna Cord’s analysis of the system? Could you
perhaps even find more examples where profit is more important than morals?
As usual, you can e-mail me the results of your discussion.
PS: If any one of you has sent me an e-mail and I have not answered,
please contact me again, possibly by phone, because then something must have
gone wrong. I try to answer all e-mails immediately.
